U.S. envoy signed North Korea document to pay for Warmbier's care: Bolton

Image
The United States signed a document agreeing to pay North Korea for the care of American Otto Warmbier but never paid the $2 million Pyongyang demanded, White House national security adviser John Bolton said on Sunday. Bolton, who said he was not part of the administration at the time, confirmed newspaper reports that North Korea demanded the money before Warmbier was flown out of Pyongyang in a coma on June 13, 2017. Asked whether U.S. envoy Joseph Yun signed the document when he went to retrieve Warmbier, Bolton told "Fox News Sunday" in an interview: "That is what I am told, yes." He said no payment was made. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2V0N7eA via Info News For You

US consumer spending jumps in March; inflation remains tame

Image
American consumer spending leapt last month to post the biggest gain in 10 years, recovering from a weak start to 2019, while inflation remained tame, according to government data released Monday. The strong finish to the third quarter comes a day before the Federal Reserve is due to meet, with markets overwhelmingly expecting the central bank to leave interest rates untouched. The latest figures confirm the picture of steady economic growth in the first quarter that were released Friday in the Commerce Department's GDP report. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2DPnLWv via Info News For You

Man arrested after knives found at school desk of only male heir to Japanese imperial throne

Image
Japanese police on Monday arrested a 56-year-old man in connection with two paring knives found at the school desk of Prince Hisahito, grandson of Emperor Akihito, local media reported. The incident comes as authorities were beefing up security ahead of the popular emperor's abdication on Tuesday after a 30-year reign, the first monarch to relinquish the throne of the world's oldest imperial family for two centuries. Akihito's eldest son, 59-year-old Crown Prince Naruhito, will take the throne on Wednesday in a series of ceremonies. Hisahito is the son of Naruhito's younger brother and the last eligible male heir. Japan's centuries-old succession would be broken if Hisahito does not have a male child as the Imperial Household Law, in place since 1947, does not allow women to ascend the Chrysanthemum Throne. Japan's Imperial family The suspect, identified as Kaoru Hasegawa, was arrested on suspicion of illegally entering the premises of the junior high school the...

Washington's Woeful Maduro Miscalculation

Image
When Washington recognized Juan Guaido as Venezuela’s rightful president, Trump administration officials clearly hoped that incumbent Nicolas Maduro’s grip on power would not last long. There were reasons for such optimism. The socialist regime’s corruption and grotesque economic mismanagement had reached crisis levels. Maduro and his predecessor, Hugo Chavez, had transformed Venezuela from one of Latin America’s most prosperous countries into a poverty-stricken horror marked by runaway inflation and severe shortages even of the most basic consumer necessities. Venezuela was the latest exhibit in the museum of socialist calamities. Maduro’s popularity had plunged, and his implementation of ever more autocratic measures to suppress opponents did not help his situation. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2IOXtYn via Info News For You

FOREX-Dollar rally stalls underlining slowdown fears

A rally in the dollar faltered on Monday with strong U.S. data doing little to lift the currency or convince investors that a slowdown in activity is over. The greenback traded in a narrow range as Japan kicked off a week of holidays, typically a period of thin liquidity that can prompt spikes in volatility. A Federal Reserve policy meeting, Brexit negotiations and a raft of global data including on U.S. core inflation and payrolls could each be the trigger for big currency swings this week. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2PCN9TL via Info News For You

Jordan Peterson accuses Cambridge University of being 'unprofessional' after he found out from Twitter that he was stripped of fellowship

Image
The controversial professor Jordan Peterson has said Cambridge University is "unprofessional" after he found out the institution had stripped him of a fellowship via Twitter. Dr Peterson, who will be speaking at a sold-out show at the Hammersmith Apollo next month, said he felt "sorrow" and "shock" over the decision, which came as Cambridge academics lambasted the university for inviting him. Many have dismissed the views of the Canadian psychologist, who has hundreds of thousands of fans and styles himself as the "professor against political correctness". He has argued for enforced monogamy, pushed the view that men are victims of gender discrimination, and said that the idea of white privilege is a “Marxist lie.” The professor has also come under fire for posing in a photograph next to a man in a shirt with the slogan "proud Islamaphobe". However, he has said the university was wrong to strip him of his visiting fellowship, telling th...

North Korea vs. the F-35 Stealth Fighter (Who Wins? Who Dies?)

Image
Alternatively, the F-35A might be assigned to dangerous suppression or destruction of enemy air defenses (SEAD/DEAD) missions. The stealth and onboard jamming capabilities of the F-35 would make it more survivable than the ROKAF’s 4th generation aircraft in such a role. The ROKAF, South Korea’s Air Force received their first F-35A fighter jets in April 2019. The ROKAF hopes to eventually buy forty F-35As and should have ten F-35As by the end of the year.(This first appeared several weeks ago.)But how do these aircraft fit into the ROKAF’s existing fleet of aircraft? What role could they play in countering the North Korean KPAF?The ROKAF already fields a variety of advanced American fighters, including over one hundred KF-16Cs and around 60 F-15K Slam Eagles. The KF-16C is fully integrated with the American AMRAAM air-to-air missile, which the ROKAF fields in the AIM-120C-5 and AIM-120C-7 variants. The combination of the KF-16C and AMRAAM vastly outclasses the majority of fighters the KPA...

Boeing CEO keeps job intact after facing questions on 737 MAX crashes

Image
Boeing Co CEO and Chairman Dennis Muilenburg emerged with his job intact at an annual meeting on Monday and promised to win back the public's trust after facing tough questions in the wake of two fatal crashes of the 737 MAX plane. Battling the biggest crisis of his nearly four years as chief executive officer, Muilenburg survived a shareholder motion to split his chairman and CEO roles. "We know we do have work to do to earn and re-earn that trust and we will," Muilenburg said before ending the 16-minute news conference and ignoring shouted questions from reporters as he walked away. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2PGHrk0 via Info News For You

Impeachment Would Be a Redundant Judgment

Image
The Mueller investigation was supposed to be a legal process concerned with crimes. Investigators identified no crimes to charge, and so it has, naturally, become something else: no longer a theory about a criminal conspiracy — only an irritable mood.An ordeal that had been conducted under the procedures of law in accordance with legal criteria is now an ordeal that is being conducted under the procedures of politics in accordance with political criteria — or, if you prefer, with moral criteria related to Donald Trump’s character. For those who want to see President Trump impeached and who think of impeachment as a fundamentally political process in spite of its mock-trial aspect, that’s just fine. They’ll take their pound of flesh, however it is had.The problem with this point of view is that the question of Donald Trump’s personal fitness for office already has been adjudicated as a political matter: That is what happened in the 2016 presidential election. Many critics, myself includ...

Even if the new job is similar, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), in several cases, has denied the application by the new employer on various grounds. The most common reason for denial is that the new position does not constitute a ‘specialty occupation’. from Times of India http://bit.ly/2UNxqCi via Info News For You

Should Trump Worry About the Putin-Xi Meeting?

Image
Russian president Vladimir Putin left his meeting with North Korea’s Kim Jong-un to journey to Beijing. The former’s destination: a forum on China’s infamous Belt and Road initiative, where Putin announced the approval of a toll road tying Belarus to Kazakhstan. The more important objective, though, for the Russian leader was meeting with Chinese president Xi Jinping. The former lauded Belt and Road “an extremely important initiative” and said the two countries’ ties had reached “an unprecedentedly high level.”In fact, neither statement is true. The two governments haggled over Russian support for that single project for six years, and the road isn’t scheduled to be completed until 2024. If and when it actually opens is anyone’s guess. This suggests something other than “an extremely important initiative.”The bilateral relationship is better than at many points in the past, but it remains superficial. Last fall when the two leaders met, Putin announced: “We have established trust-based ...

Trump falsely claims babies are being legally executed, mimics Saudi king's accent and calls former FBI officials 'scum' in wild rally speech

Image
Donald Trump has falsely claimed that newborn babies are being legally “executed” during a wild and often incoherent rally speech in Wisconsin. The US president said mothers who had just given birth were being given the choice of keeping the child or allowing it to be killed. The claim – demonstrably false – came as he spoke about late-term abortions.“The baby is born, the mother meets with the doctor, they take care of the baby, they wrap the baby beautifully, and then the doctor and the mother determine whether or not they will execute the baby," Mr Trump said to a chorus of boos.He rounded on Wisconsin’s democrat governor Tony Evers, who, earlier this year, vetoed a Republican bill that would have required doctors to provide medical care to babies born alive after failed abortion attempts.Mr Evers said he did not support the bill because he believed existing laws offered enough protection to such babies. The remarkable inaccuracy was one of a series of extraordinary claims made by...

Bernie Sanders v the Democratic establishment: what the battle is really about

Image
Sanders is sparking a debate within the Democratic party about whether courting big dollars is the only way to stay competitive Bernie Sanders speaks during a rally in Fort Worth, Texas, on Thursday. Photograph: Vernon Bryant/AP In a crowded Democratic presidential primary field, there is one candidate who has drawn sustained opposition from party elites: Vermont’s Senator Bernie Sanders. The New York Times reports that major donors, party operatives, senior lawmakers and rival candidate and South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg have been attending private meetings where they discuss, among other things, how to prevent a Sanders nomination. One explanation for why a party would try to stop the ascendancy of a certain candidate is electability. But that explanation is weak: Sanders has maintained high national favorability ratings, and is outperforming the incumbent Republican, Donald Trump, in polling. Another explanation would be that the dispute is interpersonal in nature. A dramatic New Y...

Fighter Fight: Russia's Su-35 vs. America's F-15, F-16 or F-35 (Who Dies?)

Image
As history shows us, many times in war you do not always get to chose from the most optimal of solutions.Russia’s Su-35 fighter certainly has western defense outlets buzzing--and for good reason.Moscow, despite heavy sanctions and an economy that has certainly seen better days, keeps pumping out new combat systems one after another--items like new tanks, submarines, nuclear weapons platforms and more. While many were indeed designed and planned for ahead of the imposition of sanctions, Russia is clearly making a big effort to modernize its armed forces, especially its air force, and moving past older Soviet platforms. The Su-35 is a good example of such efforts. So how would the Su-35 do against America’s best planes? How would it fare against an American air force that is clearly the best in the world.  How would, for example, the Su-35 do in a combat situation against Lockheed Martin’s F-35 Joint Strike Fighter? How would Russia’s new plane do against older aircraft like the F-15 o...

Image
REUTERSAt least 15 people, including six children, were killed Friday night when suspected militants set off a series of explosions and engaged cops in gunfire during a raid by Sri Lankan police in connection to the deadly Easter Sunday suicide bombings, authorities said. Authorities told the AP they received a tip that members of the group associated with the coordinated terrorist bombings that killed more than 250 people last week were in a safe house  near the town of Sammanthurai. When they arrived, militants  “detonated three explosions and opened fire.”The U.S. Department of State, citing possible secondary attacks, urged Americans to reconsider traveling to Sri Lanka and have ordered children of government workers to leave the country. Most of the victims in the latest round of violence—which also included six men and three women—were killed in three bomb blasts that ripped apart the roof and one wall of the house, police said. One witness told CNN the explosion during t...
